The first ladies of the 10 ASEAN countries, on a visit to Korea with their spouses to attend the ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit in Busan on December 11 and 12, visited two cultural centers in the port city on December 12.

Bouathong Thammavong, Bun Rany and Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, spouses to, respectively, the leaders of Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, first toured the Busan Museum of Art. They browsed the works of art by about 100 artists who represent the ASEAN nations in the “Origin of Beauty” exhibition.
The Laotian first lady stopped in front of a panting by Laotian artist Marc Leguay, titled, “Culture of Laos.” She gave a brief explanation of some of Laos’ traditions and its natural beauty, as seen in the artwork.

“As there exist connections between the brush strokes, there exist in some way associations at the people-to-people, nation-to-nation and thing-to-thing level,” said Lee Sang-soo, an art researcher at the museum who helped guide the visiting first ladies. He was commenting on “Correspondence,” a work of art by artist Lee Woo-hwan that features three blue brush strokes on a white canvas.
“The Korea-ASEAN community is now beginning to see the years of effort made toward solidifying the relationship come to fruition,” Lee added. The first ladies responded with a big round of applause as a gesture of consent. The first ladies then enjoyed a special performance where a group of artists used colorful paint to draw the city’s landmark Gwangan Bridge and to write out the official slogan of the Busan ASEAN summit.

The first ladies then moved to the Busan Cinema Center where they were greeted by actor Jang Keun-suk. They watched highlights of some famous Korean movies and entries at the ASEAN Film Festival that kicked off in Seoul on November 27 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
The first ladies also experienced Chromakey technologies when they posed with the actor while making hand prints.
