"20, Once Again" (2015), a film collaboration between Korean and mainland Chinese studios, is enjoying unexpected popularity in the Chinese market, writing a new chapter in the two nations' joint cinematic history.
According to CJ E&M, the Korean studio that worked alongside Beijing Century Media, "20, Once Again" ("重返20岁") was screened across 5,500 theaters in China and by January 24 had recorded sales of CNY 3 trillion, equivalent to around USD 48 million, only 17 days after its official release. By January 25, over 10 million viewers had seen the movie. It's the highest-grossing Korea-China co-production ever, and is also considered to be a successful romantic comedy.
'20, Once Again' is a make-believe comedy that revolves around a woman in her 70s who is transformed into her 20-something self.
The film is a comedy that tells the story of a woman in her 70s who is turned into her 20-year-old self. It's a Mandarin language re-make of the Korean movie "Miss Granny" ("수상한 그녀") released in 2013. "20, Once Again" was directed by Taiwan's Leste Chen and stars Yang Zi Shan and Grace Guei.
The film is receiving rave reviews from many media outlets. Xinhuanet (新华网) said that it's a feast for the eyes and the ears as it brings laughter, tears and romance. Tencent (騰訊) said the audience is totally immersed in the story and that the two-hour running time just flies by. Phoenix TV (鳳凰衛視) said the film is equipped with fresh material, has a solid storyline and features great acting.

On January 15, "20, Once Again" was released in other regions, including Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., Hong Kong and Taiwan. There, too, it is receiving positive reviews. With this successful cinematic collaboration, the two nations are stepping up their efforts to produce more movies together. One upcoming collaboration project is a Mandarin re-make of the Korean movie "Innocent Steps" ("댄서의 순정") released in 2005, which starred actress Mun Geun-yeong and actor Park Gun-hyeong. This new collaboration will feature a Chinese actor and a Korean actress. "Innocent Steps" tells the love story of two people attracted to each other through dance.
Previously, there have been a number of co-productions between Korean and Chinese studios. One of the more popular works among them was "A Wedding Invitation" ("이별계약," "分手合約") released in 2013. It saw sales of CNY 193 million in the Chinese market. There has also been "Mr. Go," released the same year, "Sophie's Revenge," released in 2009, and "Battle of Wits" released in 2006.
