Throughout her career, sculptor Kim Yun Shin has been quite active in Argentina, on the opposite side of the Earth from Korea. Now, she will be holding an exhibit at the Hanwon Museum of Art in Seocho-gu District, Seoul: “Sixty Years of Life in Art of Kim Yun Shin - A Song of Soul.”

Sponsored by the Korea-Argentina Society (Sociedad Argentina de Corea), this exhibit reviews the artist’s 60 years of life in the world of art by showcasing 70 of her works, including paintings, sculptures and installation works. The exhibit will take place from June 11 to July 8.

Born in Wonsan, Hamgyeongnam-do (South Hamgyeong Province), in 1935, Kim graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Hongik University in 1959. She then moved to France and majored in sculpture and printmaking at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She taught in the department of sculpture at Sangmyung University as an assistant professor until 1983. In late 1983, she was mesmerized by the beautiful nature and hard texture of the local algarrobo trees when traveling in Argentina. She quit her job as a professor and decided to settle there. Since then, she has been continuing her artistic work for 32 years in that country. Her works can be found in various places, such as at the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art, the Mexico National Museum of Modern Art and at the Beijing International Sculpture Park. The city of Buenos Aires invited her five times to its Night at the Museum, a special event which the city has been holding on the second Saturday of November every year since 2010. Kim began making iron sculptures in the 1960s, and sculpting with painting and totem beliefs, by using the methods of printing from the 1970s and 1980s. In Argentina, she concentrated on wooden sculptures. Recently, she has been actively making oil paintings, such as a series of paintings titled “Alma Sonora,” or, "A Song of my Soul."
