A series of classical music concerts will enrich the new month of June.
The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra has readied a set of shows that will run throughout the month. The opener, “Svetlin’s Spain Symphony,” will take place at the Seoul Arts Center on June 10.
Led by Germany-born conductor Constantin Trinks, the orchestra will present Romantic pieces, including Wagner’s “The Mastersingers of Nuremburg, Prelude” and Schumann’s Symphony No. 2. The highlight, on June 10, will be violinist Svetlin Roussev, who has also served as a concert master for the orchestra for the past eight years. They will collaborate on Lalo’s “Symphonie espagnole, Op. 21.”

On June 17, the audience will get the rare chance to see the Seoul orchestra performing not on stage but in their actual practice room, a friendlier approach to hearing their music up close.
Under the baton of conductor Choi Soo-yeoul, approximately 40 members of the group will play Elga’s “Serenade,” Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 and the first movement from Hoffmeister’s Viola Concerto. The conductor will also switch from his job of conducting to being a commentator, as he will describe to the audience each piece of music being performed so that they will get a better understanding of the music.

Chamber music specialists from the Seoul Symphony Orchestra will perform in the Sejong Chamber Hall at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts on June 19.
On June 19, the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in central Seoul will host the orchestra’s third concert of the series, “Chamber Music Series: Favorite Beethoven Piano Trios.”
For the show, string players Joo Yeon-sun and Joo Yeon-kyung, who are sisters, along with violinist Lim Ka-jin and pianist Cho Jae-hyuck, will bring to life Beethoven’s chamber music pieces that are considered to represent the early, middle and latter part of the composer’s career.
Conductor Sung Shi-yeon from the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra will orchestrate the final show on June 25 at the Seoul Arts Center. The show will begin with Kurt Weil’s “Die Dreigroschenoper, Suite.” The orchestra will then continue to revive Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, a piece that gives the audience a peek into the “young Beethoven” just before he made it big with his Symphony No. 3.
Baritone Wolfgang Holzmair is joining the orchestra, too. The singer will sing Mahler’s “The Boy’s Magic Horn,” a collection of German folk poems and songs, alongside the orchestra.
