Music will help to bring harmony to the Korea-Japan relationship.
Ensembles from the two Asian nations will put on a joint-show titled “Harmony in Music” at the Seoul Arts Center in southern Seoul on June 22. The show is part of events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Seoul and Tokyo.

The Japanese orchestra, comprised entirely of female flutists, will collaborate with Korean musicians on a range of masterpieces. The featured songs include Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 “Morning Mood,” Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dances” and Khachaturian’s “Waltz from Masquerade Suite.”
The highlight will be Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.2 being revived by four flute soloists: Lee Joo-hee, Bae Jae-young, both from Korea, and Kanda Hiroaki and Shimiz Nobutaka, from Japan.

The ensembles will feature other musical genres in their repertoire, too. In particular, the audience will enjoy the, “harmony between traditional and European classical sounds,” when
gayageum zither player Min Eui-sik and
janggo drum player Kim Ki-chul join the ensemble to play well-known folk songs and children’s songs, like “Pongdang Pongdang,” “On the Flower Garden” and “Flowers.”
Lastly, a Korea-Japan choir of 100 people will entertain the audience, signing in harmony to wrap up the show. “The concert will not only offer melodies of unity, but also allow both Korean and Japanese musicians to commune with each other. This helps open a starting point of further possible musical interaction,” said flutist Bae Jae-young who also serves as the director for the June 22 concert.
