Students from different cultures, nationalities and age ranges shared a series of presentations on Korean arts, literature, philosophy and history, coming together as one at the 2015 “Exploring Korean Humanities Together” competition held in Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do Province (North Chungcheong Province), on July 4.
There seemed to be no sense of difference found among the participants, as they kept in tune with each other, working on their team projects over the past three months in preparation for the competition.
Throughout the process, they put their heads together, held a series of discussions and came up with ideas about their subject matter. What really brought them together, however, was their curiosity about Korea and its traditions, as well as their ability to speak fluent Korean. Although they had to compete on different teams, they soon became friends, thankful for how they got to know each other.
The results of the competition were announced on July 5. Regardless of whether they won or not, all the participants, lighthearted, mingled together for the remainder of the time, sharing their school life and life in Korea more broadly.
“Thank you so much for holding this nice program for us,” one participant said. “We will continue the friendships we built through this event.”

The Laonjena team, made up of four students each from Korea, Azerbaijan, mainland China and Egypt, explores the life of art collector Chun Hyeong-pil (1906-1962). The team gives a theatrical performance in which Chun compares a pair of paintings: ‘A Beauty’ by Shin Yun-bok, one of the most famous Joseon painters, and the iconic bust of ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti.
