Zena Holloway, a British underwater photographer, is holding her first exhibition in Seoul, showcasing a collection of her photographs taken underwater. The images on exhibit here reveal the mystical, unknown world under the waves.

Holloway’s “The Fantasy” exhibition is underway at the Seoul Arts Center in Seocho-dong, in southern Seoul, and has on display approximately 200 photographs taken over her career spanning more than 20 years.

Among the images captured behind the photographer’s lens, there are young children swimming through the water, a woman dressed in white and a woman wrapped in a red cloth floating through the water. In these images, Holloway captures dreamlike scenes and an underwater atmosphere.

One of Zena Holloway’s representative photographs is her series of ‘Angels’ taken in 2005. One image from the series features an angel-like young woman seemingly falling into an abyss of black water.

The artist's series of “Angels” captures young women in white winged dresses floating aimlessly underwater, with their hair and dress flowing naturally. The photos in the series make the subjects look like angels from Heaven. Another well-known series is that of “The Water Babies,” featuring babies hand-in-hand with full smiles, swimming freely underwater.

One of Zena Holloway’s photos from ‘The Water Babies’ series, taken between 2005 and 2007, is ‘Meeting.’ It features two children, hand-in-hand, swimming freely in the water. One of the children is the photographer’s own daughter (left), then five years old.

The photographer has captured a variety of subjects underwater, ranging from women and animals, such as dogs, horses and ducks, through to even babies, using her distinguished photography skills. Born in Bahrain in 1973 and growing up in London, she started working underwater when she learned how to scuba dive at the age of 18 in Egypt over two weeks. Fascinated by what she saw and felt underwater, Holloway decided to pursue underwater photography.

The Seoul exhibition has not only images taken throughout her career, but also video clips that trace the process of her arduous underwater job to capture the beauty of nature. There is also a collection of her various tools and gear that she uses when shooting, too.

“What I love about working underwater is the uncertainty. Under the water, you will encounter a magic unfolding in front of your eyes. For me, water is my canvas and the light reflected into the camera is my palette of colors,” said Holloway.

The photo exhibition continues until Sept. 7. It is open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and is closed on Mondays. For more information, please follow the link below.
