People keen on design are gathering in Gwangju.
The 2015 Gwangju Design Biennale began on Oct. 15 and its theme this year is "Design With Conviviality." It delves deeper into design as part of our day-to-day lives through exhibitions on a variety of themes.

The 2015 Gwangju Biennale opens on Oct. 15 in Gwangju. About 3,000 pieces by 4,000 designers from 35 countries are on display at the show.
Gwangju Branding, the main focus of the biennale, involves nine products that "merge the values of the East and West." The key idea is to connect nine designers, including Stefano Giovannoni and Odile Decq, to local manufacturers in Gwangju so that they can collaborate and commercialize the outcomes of their collaboration: kitchen wares and light fixtures. The table setting "Mini-men" by Giovannoni and the local design group Insnine is one of them. Golden mini men climb up a ceramic jug or rest in a white and gold bowl, bringing a smile to the face.
The Asia Design Hub was inspired by traditional living spaces in Korea, China and Japan. Designers from the three countries reinterpreted traditional life styles in each country and presented their own version of modern interpretations of living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens.

A special exhibition this year features Le Corbusier (1887-1965), the Swiss-French architect who is famous for his work on modern urban dwellings, as well as his cube-shaped furniture. The urban lifestyle proposed by the architect is on display and, of course, his Grand Comfort, the iconic cube-shaped armchair, as well.
Other exhibitions included at the biennale this year include: Design R&D run by universities and businesses, which focuses on a sustainable future; the New Italian Design 2.0 show, a travelling exhibition by the Milano Triennale Design Museum; and, the MoMA Special Gallery.

During the biennale this year, the International Design Congress (IDC) will also be held from Oct. 17 to 23 in Gwangju. Attendees will discuss the role of design and how it can expand the potential of the objects that are part of our everyday, day-to-day lives.
The 2015 Gwangju Design Biennale will provide an opportunity to appreciate and enjoy high-quality design as it permeates our day-to-day lives until Nov. 13.
