To celebrate the "Years 2015-2016 of Korea-France Bilateral Exchange," music from the French Baroque period will fill the concert halls of Korea this March.
French Baroque master Marc Minkowski will be leading Les Musiciens du Louvre (The Musicians of the Louvre), a French period instrument ensemble, in three performances starting this weekend. They will perform at the Seoul Arts Center for two nights on March 5 and 6, and then at the Daejeon Arts Center on March 8.

Marc Minkowski is a French conductor known for his interpretations of French Baroque and 20th century Classical music.
Marc Minkowski, a leading figure on the French Baroque music scene, will be conducting his ensemble in a performance of "
Une Symphonie Imaginaire" by Jean Philippe Rameau (1714-1787), one of the most important French composers of the Baroque era. They will also bring to the stage "
Don Juan ou le Festin de Pierre" ("Don Juan or the Stone Guest's Banquet") by Christoph Gluck (1714-1787), a German classical composer best known for his operas in the early Classical period. The two performances will be staged on March 6 and 8, once in Seoul and then in Daejeon.
Minkowski and his ensemble will also perform symphonies by composers from the Romantic period. Symphony No. 3, the "Scottish Symphony," by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) and Symphony No. 8, "The Great Symphony," by Franz Schubert (1797-1828) will fill the concert hall on March 5.

During their Korean tour this March, Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre will perform a symphony by French Baroque master Jean Philippe Rameau, as well as symphonies by Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn from the Romantic period.
Les Musiciens du Louvre are highly regarded for their lyrical interpretations of music from the French Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded its repertoire to cover a variety of musical genres from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Minkowski, who founded the ensemble at the age of 19 in 1982, has played a major role in bringing the works of French Baroque composers into the limelight. Under his direction, the ensemble has revitalized works by French Baroque composers such as Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687), Marin Marais (1656-1728) and Jean Philippe Rameau.
If you are unfamiliar with music from the French Baroque or Romantic periods, it is possible to preview a selection of the repertoire for the upcoming performances at the ensemble's website.
