The lives and traditions of smaller ethnolinguistic groups in the Philippines have now been recorded onto CDs and DVDs.

The International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP), under the auspices of UNESCO, sponsored by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines (NCCA) recently released “Pagdaloy, Flow of Life,” a collection of documentary videos about small Philippine ethnolinguistic groups and their music.

It is a collection of analog data possessed by local institutes, turned into digital records. The two organizations chose content that was deemed to be culturally valuable and of relatively fine quality, and made it all into a set of eight DVDs and two CDs.

The DVDs in 'Pagdaloy, Flow of Life,' a collection of digital records about smaller ethnolinguistic groups in the Philippines, describe the Kalinga people who are famous for their heavy ornaments.

The DVDs in the collection each convey the lives of ethnolinguistic groups, such as the Maguindanao, Mandaya, Kalinga, Subanon, Tagalog, Manobo, Tboli and Yakan people. The videos were part of a Philippine TV series “Travel Time” which ran from 1986 to 2015. The records capture various aspects of their lives, including traditional rituals, celebrations and music.

The CDs carry 13 pieces of music for wedding ceremonies and nine pieces for agricultural practices by the Yakan. All of the musical pieces contained are played by Uwang Ahadas, a renowned Yakan musician and a Living Human Treasure of the Philippines, and members of his family. His life and his performances are part of the final DVD about the Yakan.

The ICHCAP will distribute the collection to government organizations in Korea and the Philippines and to related NGOs. The content of the collection will also be posted at the website of the ICHCAP (www.ichcap.org/).

The ICHCAP has been supporting ethnolinguistic groups across the Asia-Pacific region in efforts to digitalize analog data of intangible cultural heritage items. The collection on the unique ethnolinguistic groups of the Philippines is its fourth, after “Sounds From Mongolian Grasslands,” “Melodies From Uzbekistan” and “The Spirit of Vietnam.”
