The European Jazz Festival 2017 was held at the Mapo Art Center in Seoul from Sept. 1 to 3, electrifying fans as musicians from around the world presented a combination of jazz alongside impromptu performances.
One of the most hailed performances was when Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala and Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius appeared on the stage to perform their song titled “Seoul.”
The duo composed the song as a tribute to the city of Seoul, and they performed it for the first time at the festival. The song begins with a 49-second excerpt from the song “Miryang Arirang" (밀양 아리랑), and is followed by lilting jazz melodies. The tunes bring to life the rhythms of Korea, both past and present.
“Seoul” is among the 12 songs dedicated to six cities around the world -- Vienna, Helsinki, Palma, Berlin, Rome and Seoul -- from the duo’s new album, scheduled to be released in October.

The musicians sat down with Korea.net after their performance on Sept. 3.
- Among all the Asian cities out there, why did you choose Seoul for your new album?
Rantala: Seoul is a city that we both visit very often. We like performing here, as Korean audiences are so committed and full of energy. We also love Korean food. That’s why we decided to dedicate one new composition to this city.
- Your song “Seoul” starts with an excerpt from “Miryang Arirang.” Why did you choose that version of the famous folk song "Arirang"?
Wakenius: I’ve long-loved Korea’s many versions of the song "Arirang." I’ve recorded other versions of "Arirang" before, too. The first time I heard “Miryang Arirang,” I immediately fell for it. I thought it would be nice to use it in our songs. I want to be the “'Arirang' Ambassador” to the world!
- Is there any message you want to send to your fans with the song “Seoul”?
Rantala: Visit Seoul and enjoy it!
Wakenius: The message is that people from different countries should come together, and then we can realize just how alike we all are.
