On Sept. 9, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Jongwhan sent separate letters of congratulations to pianist Sohn Jeung-beum and to director Kim Gina, both of whom recently won an international prize.
On Sept. 8, the pianist clinched the first prize in the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany, becoming the first Korean to win the competition.
The ARD competition, first held in 1952, is one of the representative classical music competitions in Munich for instrumentalists and singers.
On the same day, director Kim grabbed a virtual reality (VR) award at the 74th Venice International Film Festival with her 12-minute VR documentary “Dongducheon" (동두천), a film based on a true story that tells of a murder that took place in Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do Province, in 1992.
Minister Do congratulated pianist Sohn in a letter, saying, “Keep working hard so that you will be long-remembered as the world’s best pianist.” To director Kim, the minister wrote, “Winning is a splendid achievement that lets the world know the creativity and artistry of Korean films. I hope you will continue to contribute to the development of Korean movies on the global stage.”
