The Bucheon International Animation Festival (BIAF) has been designated as an Oscar-qualifying international film festival.

At a press conference at the Courtyard Seoul Time Square on Jan. 19, BIAF Chairman Yoon Gap yong said that the Academy of Motions Pictures Arts and Science, the host of the Academy Awards, officially accredited the BIAF at the end of 2017.

Thanks to the accreditation, recipients of the BIAF Grand Prize will now be eligible for consideration as a preliminary candidate in the Animated Short Film category of the Academy Awards, either with or without a standard theatrical run. This year’s BIAF will be held from Oct. 19 to 23.

Also present at the press conference was the festival’s honorary ambassador, Park Chorong, a member of the pop group Apink.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences accredited the BIAF and the Busan International Short Film Festival both on Dec. 21, 2017.
