Two of Korea’s highly-noted authors, Han Kang and Kim Ae-ran, have been nominated for one of the most-coveted German literary awards.
The Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI) announced on May 29 that Han’s “Human Acts” and Kim’s “My Palpitating Life” have been nominated for the Liberaturpreis 2018 award, an award that’s given by Litprom, a literature promotional group that’s part of the Frankfurt Book Fair organizing committee. It awards the prize to one female author every year from Asia, Africa or South America.
This is not the first time for a Korean female author to be nominated for the award. Two Koreans actually received the prestigious award before. In 2003, Oh Jung-hee received the award for her novel “The Bird” and in 2004 Lee Hye-kyoung was awarded the Liberaturpreis Honorable Mention for her novel “The House on the Road.”
Litprom changed its way of selecting the awardee in 2016, from a panel of judges selecting one author to online voting from worldwide readers. The winner will be given EUR 3,000 for the prize and also be invited to an awards ceremony at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair.
Online voting is currently underway from May 25 to 31 and invites anyone from around the world to cast a vote. The voting results will be announced in mid-June.
