In June, many intangible cultural assets listed as UNESCO heritage items of the world, including the Gangneung Danoje Festival, the dance Cheoyongmu, the martial art taekkyeon, the Yeongsanjae religious ritual and the pansori style of lyrical singing/ story-telling, will be coming to the stage at theaters and parks across the nation.
The National Intangible Heritage Center and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation on May 30 announced the summer schedule for performances of Korea's intangible heritage items.
As June 18 marks the day of Dano, a traditional holiday that falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, artists will stage celebrative rituals for Dano practiced in many different areas, such as Gangneung in Gangwon-do Province, in Jain-myeon Village, Gyeongsan-si City, in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, and in the port of Beobseongpo in Jeollanam-do Province.
Cheoyongmu, a court dance from the Silla Kingdom (57 B.C. – A.D. 935), will be performed at the Daejeon Municipal Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Center in Daejeon on June 3.
The Yeongsanjae, a Buddhist ritual that honors fallen heroes of the nation, will be hosted at Bongwonsa Temple in Seoul on June 6.
There will be a demonstration of the traditional martial art taekkyeon at the Taekkyeonwon martial arts center in Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, on June 16.
Pansori masters Song Sun-seop, Jung Chul-ho and Shin Young Hee will perform on June 14, 15 and 29 at traditional Pungryu theater in Gangnam-gu District, Seoul.
