The K-pop boy band BTS has earned 10 Japan Gold Disc Awards, a record high by a foreign act.
The Recording Industry Association of Japan on March 14 said the group won 10 honors in nine categories in announcing the winners of the 36th edition of the awards. This broke BTS' own record set last year of eight, marking its second straight record at the awards.
The septet won Best Asian Artist for the fourth year in a row. "BTS, The Best," released in Japan in June last year, also won in the Album of the Year and Best 3 Albums categories.
The group's digital single "Butter" claimed Song of the Year by Download, Best 5 Songs by Download, Song of the Year by Streaming and Best 5 Songs by Streaming. The song "Permission to Dance," which was released last year, was also the second BTS song named one of the Best 5 Songs by Streaming.
"My Universe," the group's collaborative song with the British rock band Coldplay released in October last year, won Song of the Year by Download (Western). The DVD showing the 2020 online concert "BTS Map of the Soul On:E" won Music Video of the Year.
BTS said on the association's website, "We think that we could win this honorable award thanks to (the BTS' fan group) Army, which always sends us so much love, and we sincerely thank them," adding, "We will further strive to continue delivering our warm hearts to everyone through good music.
Launched in 1987 by the association, the annual awards honor artists and works that contribute to the development of the music industry based on objective data such as sales volume and downloads of albums and videos.
