The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Sept. 4 said an exhibition at Cheong Wa Dae showcasing artworks by disabled artists drew over 7,000 visitors in its first three days.
The event is the first hosted by the former presidential compound since it was opened to the public in May.
Meetings with participating artists were held over the weekend (Sept. 3-4), which proved to be a hit with visitors. Four more meetings are planned every weekend throughout the exhibition period.
Artworks were also sold, with Son Young-rak's ink-and-wash painting "Baht" being the first. The ministry said purchase requests onsite were received for other works, thus boosting the atmosphere for artists taking part in the exhibition.
Visitor Kim Myeong-ju said, "I didn't know the works were drawn by disabled artists until I read the explanation on the exhibition," adding, "It was nice to see a meaningful exhibition like this at Cheong Wa Dae, and I hope that such an event continues."
Artist Han Boo-yeol on Sept. 4 takes a photo next to his work "Give Me a Hug" in a meeting with visitors.
Bae Eun-joo, head of the Federation of Disability Culture and Arts Associations of Korea, said, "This exhibition is a special and important opportunity for disabled artists who silently worked in a difficult and isolated environment to come out in the world."
"I hope that many come and see the new look of Chunchugwan and the works that the artists put all of their efforts into. Please purchase the art you like without hesitation."
Opened on Aug. 31, the exhibition ends on Sept. 19. It is closed on Tuesdays and requires no reservation. Admission is free.
