Six out of 10 adults in the U.S. have watched the hit Netflix series "Squid Game," 90% of whom intend to view Season 2.
The New York branch office of the Korea Tourism Organization on Sept. 14 said this finding was part of the results of a survey analyzing the reputation and trends of Korean culture in the U.S. The study was jointly conducted in June with Kim Mi-ran, a professor of business at Michigan State University.
The survey was conducted on 3,218 respondents in the U.S. aged 18 or above.
Seventy-seven percent called "Squid Game" their favorite Korean drama or film (multiple responses allowed). The drama earned six Emmys this year including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Second on the list was the Oscar-winning film "Parasite" (39%), followed by the zombie blockbuster "Train to Busan" (30%) in third place and the zombie series "All of Us Are Dead" (29%) in fourth.
Fifty-two percent named Emmy winner Lee Jung-jae as their favorite Korean actor. Next in the rankings was Jung Ho-yeon, who played a former North Korean defector in "Squid Game"(45%); Song Kang-ho, who played the lead role in "Parasite" (25%); and Gong Yoo, who played a major role in "Train to Busan" (24%).
Thirty-six percent said their favorite aspect of Korean culture was K-pop (36%, multiple answers allowed). Korean dramas and movies tied for second with Hansik, or Korean cuisine (34%).
In music, BTS was the overwhelming choice as favorite Korean singer (70%), followed by BLACKPINK (33%) and Psy (21%).
The Korean food respondents liked most was ramyeon (instant noodles) (71%, multiple answers allowed). Korean-style fried (seasoned) chicken (59%) was second, barbecue and bulgogi (marinated grilled beef) third (57%) and bibimbap (rice mixed with spicy red pepper sauce, meat and vegetables) fourth (37%).
