Fourteen domestic musicals from next month will be presented in the U.K., U.S. and Japan.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Aug. 28 said it will hold performances of "creative Korean musicals" abroad next month in order with the Korea Arts Management Service as part of policy support for the global dissemination of such works announced on June 30 at a presentation for "K-Musical Vision."
The 14 musicals chosen by the ministry comprise six from the K-Musical International Market in June, five receiving mid-term development support for the Anglo-American sphere from another competition and three getting foreign distribution support.
The first musical to be staged is "You and It" by EG Musical Company slated for Sept. 1 in London as a reading performance in front of leading figures from the British capital's performing arts hub West End. Five musicals from October like Yellow Bomb's "Crazy Bread" and The Best Play's "Inside William" will be presented in the U.S. and U.K. in order.
Hong Company's "L'art reste" will also be presented in the U.S. in October. Five musicals including NTA Company's "Brahms" and Neo Inc's "The Adventure of the Final Problem" are scheduled for December in Japan.
A reading performance of the musical "Crazy Bread" is held in 2022 in the U.S.
Yeonwoo Company's "The Goddess is Watching," Neo Inc.'s "Vanishing" and Nangmanbarricade's "Yujin and Yujin," all three of which were selected for foreign distribution support, will target the Asian market. "Goddess is Watching," a joint production with China, topped ticket sales in June when it was presented in Shanghai.
"K-musicals used to play the role of wildcard in K-Culture, which is the basis for a culturally appealing nation, but is now growing into a dignified protagonist of K-Culture," Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Park Bo Gyoon. "We will continue support and interest so that they go beyond Asia to succeed on the U.S. and European markets."
