Commemorative stamps of Pinkfong and Baby Shark, the two characters who hold the YouTube record for most views worldwide, will be issued next year.
Korea Post, the national postal service under the Ministry of Science and ICT, on Dec. 27 released its plan to issue 21 stamps to mark 2024, including those of the two lovable creatures.
Stamps issued by Korea Post feature important historical figures, historic events and anniversaries or promote national projects. More than 20 types come out each year.
The Pinkfong and Baby Shark stamps will debut on May 5 to mark Children's Day. The two domestically created characters are global superstars presented through 6,000 pieces of content in 25 languages.
Uploaded in 2016, the video "Baby Shark Dance" has hit 13.8 billion views to solidify its status as the world's most-viewed YouTube video.
In addition, stamps on the 1894-95 Donghak Peasant Revolution will highlight the movement's historical value and meaning as well as mark its 130th anniversary. The centennial anniversary of the birth of poet Park Hwa-mok and the artistic world of painter Kim Whanki will also get honored through stamps.
"Stamps have long been used as a mode of communication while also being considered part of a country's culture and history," Korea Post President Cho Hae-keun said. "We will continue active efforts to promote Korea Post by looking for subjects appealing to the public and raising the marketability of commemorative stamps."
