Two domestic animated works have received nominations for awards in the international competition section of Belgium's Anima, the Brussels International Animation Film Festival.
The Korean Cultural Center in Brussels (KCC) on Feb. 26 said "Architect A" by director Lee Jong-hoon and "Pado" by director Joung Yumi were nominated in the international competition section for short films.
A work that wins best international short film in this category is automatically eligible for nomination for Best Animated Short Film at the U.S. Academy Awards the following year, the KCC added.
Winning Best Short Film (silver) last year at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada, "Architect A" is about an architect who is inspired by the lives of his clients to build homes best suited for them. Director Lee will attend the screening on Feb. 27 and meet fans there at the invitation of the festival.
Joung's "Pado," whose title means "wave" in Korean, compares human life as waves in calmly exploring people's loneliness and questions on individuals and society in black and white. Last year, this film was the country's first animated work to enter the international short film category of the Switzerland-based Locarno Film Festival.
Anima will also screen other Korean works such as director Jeon Seung Bae's "Battery Mommy," which uses the stop-motion technique, and director Heo Jeong-In's "Treasure," an adventure set in the world of monsters.
Anima is a major animated film festival in Europe that shows about 300 short and feature films every year to some 40,000 visitors.
This scene is from the animated short "Pado" by director Joung Yumi.
