Violist and conductor Lee Seungwon, aka Samuel Lee, is the first Korean to win Denmark's Malko Competition, one of the world's top contests for young conductors.

He was announced as the winner on April 21.

Held every three years since 1965 by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the competition is named after Ukrainian conductor and the orchestra's founder Nicolai Malko.

"South Korean Samuel Lee already has a flying career in the world of classical music," the competition said in a news release. "In this year's Malko Competition, Samuel Lee distinguished himself already in the first round compared to the other candidates."

"Samuel Lee has incredible energy when he conducts," added cellist Richard Krug, a member of the competition's international jury. "and his extensive experience as both musician and conductor is expressed in the most beautiful way when he conducts."

Lee will receive a cash prize of EUR 20,000 plus contracts with 24 leading orchestras worldwide.

An associate conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in Cincinnati, Ohio, he also won the 2018 BMI International Conducting Competition in Bucharest, Romania.
