"The King of Kings," an animated film by domestic film company Mofac Studios, is the biggest Korean blockbuster in history on the U.S. market.
Yonhap News and other Korean news media on April 28 said the film the previous day raked in a record-high USD 54.51 million (KRW 78.7 billion) at the American box office, breaking the previous record of USD 53.84 million by the Oscar-winning "Parasite" (2020). The animated work is now the top grossing Korean film in history in the U.S.
The film has gone viral in America through word of mouth since its release on April 11, ranking second only to "A Minecraft Movie" featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
"The King of Kings" has received favorable reviews including an "A+" from U.S. market analysis company CinemaScore, which bases its ratings on audience evaluations.
Written and directed by Mofac founder and CEO Jang Sung-ho, this film follows the life of Jesus Christ from his birth to his resurrection based on the book "The Life of Our Lord" by Charles Dickens.
"The King of Kings" features the voices of Hollywood actors Pierce Brosnan, Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman and Forest Whitaker.
