A culinary training program dubbed Sura (Royal Meal) School will train experts in Hansik (traditional cuisine) to promote the globalization of Korean food.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on March 5 said it discussed this in a National Policy Coordination Meeting at Government Complex-Seoul in the capital's Jongno-gu District chaired by the prime minister.

Sura will be divided into a "public-private cooperation" school to train Hansik professionals like chefs and a "premium" one to produce top-level experts in Korean cuisine.

Using private infrastructure, the public-private cooperation school from the second half of the year will provide practical education covering the entire industrial cycle, from Korean food basics to cooking techniques and management.

From next year, the opening of the premium school will see a small number of elite students train to become top-level Hansik experts to lead the world gourmet market.

"Sura School will serve as an bridgehead for promoting and spreading Korean food overseas," Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Miryung said. "We will do everything we can to broaden the reach of Korean food to ensure that Hansik and K-food fever transcends mere fads to emerge as global gastronomic trends."
