The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Sept. 4 announced the launch of its Global K-Zone project to expand the role of Korean Cultural Centers (KCCs) overseas from cultural exchange hubs into those promoting exports of domestic cultural content.

The zone is a permanent interactive and promotional space within a KCC showcasing products representing Korean lifestyles including beauty and cosmetics, Hansik (traditional cuisine) and fashion for visitors. Cultural events will also introduce the stories, designs and uses of the products.

The first six KCCs to get the zone are those in Los Angeles, New York, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo and Paris.

The Global K-Zone at the KCC in Tokyo, which opens this month, under the theme of Korean beauty will showcase 194 beauty products spanning 50 brands like Amorepacific, Sulwhasoo and Laneige. Interactive programs will include artificial intelligence-powered skin analysis, lip gloss making and beauty drink tastings.

The zone at the KCC in New York, which also opens this month, will present a variety of products including beauty and cosmetics, traditional fermented foods and souvenirs from the National Museum of Korea. Cultural programs such as Hansik workshops are also in the mix.

The KCCs in France and Los Angeles will open their zones next month and the two in China after October.

The plan is to open four more zones next year.

A ministry official said, "We will continue expanding the Global K-Zone project so that KCCs overseas can evolve into places representing Korean culture."
