A festival exploring new artistic possibilities at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and the human body has opened in Seoul.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Arts Korea Lab of the Korea Arts Management Service from Nov. 4-8 are hosting the Arts Korea Lab Festival under the theme "Moment Opens Memory" at the pop-up and event venue Space S-50 in Seoul's Seongdong-gu District and the lab in Jongno-gu District.
The event's aim is to reexamine the significance of the human body and senses in the AI age and explore the potential of future art based on coexistence and collaboration between humans and AI. Its focus is on new artistic experiments emerging as AI meets human senses and bodily experiences, things that data cannot capture alone.
At the opening ceremony on Nov. 4 at Space S-50, the opening performance "Moon: Building a Base of Tranquility" featured a collaboration between Base and Power City Corp., Hyundai Motor and choreographer Pyo Hyein. Combining dance, robotics, light and sound, the work depicted a future in which humans and machines work together to shape their environment and coexist.
The festival's programs include conferences, exhibitions, performing arts, talks and pitching sessions with participants like Lee Jinjoon, professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST); robot interaction designer Madeline Gannon; and Jeong Jaeseung, a KAIST professor of brain and cognitive sciences. They will discuss the potential for human-AI convergence and art and creativity in the AI era.
The schedule and information on participating in each program are available on the lab's official website (https://www.artskorealab.kr/index.do).
