Located in Seoul's Seodaemun-gu District, the stone Dongnimmun (Independence) Gate was built to inspire the spirit of independence under the guidance of famed activist Seo Jae-pil during the Korean Empire era.

At the center of the gate is Hongyemun Gate. On its inner left side is a stone staircase that leads to the top, which is surrounded with stone railings.

Seodaemun Independence Park, where the gate stands, was built to honor the spirit of independence of patriots imprisoned for promoting national liberation.
