Nigerians on Jan. 23 try noraebang (Korean-style karaoke) at the Korean Cultural Center in Abuja.

Noraebang is the Korean version of karaoke, with the word literally meaning "song room." Noraebang is popular among Koreans of all ages as a place to sing one's favorite songs and entertain friends or family.

On Jan. 23, the Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in Abuja, Nigeria, held its first event of 2019 by featuring noraebang as its Korean cultural item for the month of January. Every month features another cultural event at the center to promote and raise awareness of Korean culture among Nigerians.

The KCC featured a noraebang event for the second time in its history, with Nigeria also caught up in the global popularity of K-pop. Many Nigerian teens and those in their 20s are also fans of Hallyu.

Students of the Korean language and guests of the center gathered to sing their favorite songs at the event. For many of the attendees, it was their karaoke experience and they sang their favorite songs either alone or in harmony with others.

One student said, "There's a feeling of accomplishment when you get to experience what you see on (Korean) TV shows."
