My vacation in Guam in the last week of July was a blast and a welcome respite for my family and I. Under the bright sun of the island paradise, I enjoyed the tropical breeze but that also meant carelessly spending a longer time under the uncompromising glare of the sun.
So after returning to Seoul, I immediately used an LED light-therapy mask by Cell Return. I felt this was a perfect time to start with this new routine, and the best part was that I could do it at home at my convenience. I excitedly unboxed the platinum set containing a gold mask and a silver one.
I found out that this brand of platinum mask has the most LEDs at 1,026 than other masks. It was different from the photos and reviews I found on the internet because of the number of LEDs it possesses. Apparently, the more LEDs, the better. The structure of the mask also covers the whole face, meaning that the LEDs are evenly distributed for more even face coverage.
The gold mask was exciting to put on. My two sons called me an "alien" or "Iron Man" and had fun watching me either sitting or lying down with the mask on. July 29, right after I settled back here in Seoul, was when I first used the mask. Every night, I'd do the usual routine of cleansing and washing my face and applying a toner and a serum, and then put on the LED mask. Each day, I patiently waited until my 20 minutes with the mask on was over.
I eventually settled on using the silver mask rather than the gold one, though my sons found it creepier on my face. This is because the silver mask has a hole on the face and the nose that makes it less suffocating when your face is fully covered. Not that I felt suffocated while using the gold mask, but the idea of seeing clearly even with it on was a big plus for me.
The platinum set also came with silicon for eye protection. I sometimes use it to minimize LED disturbance to my eyes but at other times, I don't use them as I just allow myself to doze off and relax.
The platinum mask has three colors: red, blue and pink. I'm not sure what the pink LED lights do but the blue ones are ideal for acne treatment, skin blemishes and scars. The red lights stimulate collagen and are good for skin rejuvenation, firming and brightening.
My 43-year-old skin needs rejuvenation and firming, so it was a no-brainer to mainly use the red lights for my light therapy. I'd been using the red mask diligently for four weeks. And I've missed just three days of using it on days I was too exhausted to go through the whole process.
How did my skin react to the LED treatment? Realistically, the four weeks of using it didn't result in dramatic changes. I don't have pore-less or whitehead-free skin to boast of.
But the gradual changes that came made me feel better about my skin. Over the four-week period, I noticed that my skin grew brighter and a little firmer. But what I noticed most was no pimple breakout while undergoing the treatment. August is a busy time for me and when I'm busy and stressed out, I usually see a pimple or two on my face. But not this time, though I did have nights when I had to stay up a bit longer. This alone was a big relief.
