To mark the 30th anniversary of dialogue relations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Korea, people from ASEAN member nations participated in the 2019 ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit from Nov. 25-27. On the first day, ministers, vice ministers and guests from Southeast Asia visited the ASEAN-ROK Smart City Fair under the guidance of Korean Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Hyun-mee.
At the event, every ASEAN nation had its own pavilion and a representative presenting smart city concepts, new town development and partnership with Korea. For example, New Clark City of the Philippines and pilot cities of the ASEAN Smart City Network were presented as well as plans for innovation, utility development, mixed-use industrial, integrated transportation system and waste management in the Philippine cities of Cebu City, Davao and Manila.
Korea's Smart City Pavilions demonstrated smart technology such as for energy, an Internet of Things smart home platform, bus shelter and water technology. The smart city's seven innovative factors and core services were mobility, education and jobs, culture and shopping, governance, life and security, energy and environment, and health care.
An estimated 60% of the world's population will live in cities by 2030. The transition to smart cities is growing under a vision to better preserve the urban environment and residents. In all ASEAN member nations, the development and long-term success of smart cities will strongly depend on government support.
