As the coronavirus pandemic engulfs the world in a blanket of uncertainty, one country is being lauded for its swift and timely measures to curb the effects of the virus.
Korea, which detected its first case of COVID-19 in the third week of January, armed itself with adequate information and medical strategies within a week to flatten the curve of the outbreak without imposing a ban or a nationwide lockdown. Strong leadership combined with the people's selflessness have garnered praise from around the world, something beautifully captured in the video "Korea, Wonderland?" produced by the Korean Culture and Information Service.
The sequel was the aptly titled "A Letter from Wonderland" released on April 17, presenting a thoughtful and heartening narrative that invited everyone regardless of nationality, race or gender to join hands in the fight against the coronavirus.
As I watched the video, I couldn't help but appreciate the efforts of the Korean government and people for bravely confronting the situation as a tight-knit unit and leading the fight against the pandemic. The following are several points described in the video.
Call for solidarity
Addressed to "K," who could be Kuhn, Karl, Kevin or Kimura, the letter urges everyone to come together in the fight against the coronavirus given the dire need for global unity to achieve victory. It also mentions rising prejudice born out of ignorance and the hope for a world that can look beyond trivial matters to focus on what's important now.
Act of sharing
The video shows the selflessness of Koreans who give back to society. From people making masks at home and offering extras to others to those offering meals to the needy, this emergency has united the Korean people. The government is also sharing with the world its methods that have helped flattened the curve of the pandemic. These methods have garnered praise not only from world leaders but also from health experts and leading institutions globally.
Need for transparency and development
The video highlights how mass testing is not the only way to detect and curb the spread of the coronavirus; it emphasizes the need for advanced health care systems as well. It also shows the need for freedom of the press to make it easier for the public to access real-time relevant information so that necessary action can be taken. The government has also been open to accepting critical feedback without compromising public safety.
Appreciation of heroes
These times show how dependent the public is on many people. From health care staff, police officers and sanitary workers to the common public, unsung heroes are being applauded for their hard work, dedication and sacrifice not just in Korea, but all over the world.
