The Korean Embassy in Bulgaria on Oct. 23 held the opening ceremony for an exhibition featuring Hangeul and Cyrillic at San Stefano Gallery in Sofia. The event's organizers ensured compliance with the safety rules of the Bulgarian government such as strict disinfection, temperature checks for everyone in attendance and mask wearing.

The free exhibition marked the 30th anniversary of bilateral ties and ran through Oct. 29. The highlights included works by artists from both nations as shown in their unique writing systems.

The ceremony started with a speech by Korean Ambassador to Sofia Jeong Jin-kyu, who spoke about the history of Hangeul and the philosophy behind it. For example, he said the Korean word for love, sarang, comes from the word for people, saram.

Other speeches were given by diplomatic officials and professors from Bulgaria's National Academy of Arts.

After the speeches, the attendees viewed the pieces in the exhibition and discussed them. The event was a great opportunity to learn more about Hangeul and its similarities with Cyrillic.
