The Korean fusion group Seodo, named after its leader Seo Do, combines traditional genres with today's mainstream pop. (Seodo)
The six-member Korean band Seodo (whose name is stylistically written as "sEODO" by the group) and its founder Seo Do are the creators of the musical genre "Joseon pop." Their music is where the traditional vocal technique of pansori (one-person lyrical opera) meets modern lyrics and melodies, creating something that appeals to both the older and younger generations.
The following are excerpts from a Nov. 12 interview with Seo.
What inspired you to create "Joseon pop?"
When I was young, I studied traditional Korean music and majored in pop music composition in college. Because I studied both Eastern and Western music, I was able to create my own genre: Joseon pop. The musical artists who influenced me are Amy Winehouse, Queen and Whitney Houston.
What goes into your works and performances? And do you write lyrics based on your own experiences or imagination?
When creating my works based on traditional music, the language and expressions used in the past might prove unfamiliar to the public, so I tend to write lyrics in a way that is easily comprehensive. My musical arrangement depends on the song, as each is different. I use traditional lyrics in certain songs but in others, I add my imagination to the originals to tell a story. And the lyrics of all of my songs are based on my experiences and feelings.
Your fashion style incorporates Hanbok (traditional costumes). How did you reimagine it in a more modern way?
Like my music, I prefer clothes that are not completely traditional but comprise a traditional reinterpretation of clothing. Rather than wearing a single piece, I prefer a variety of clothes in layers, and the way they feel when I put them on and then adding accessories give me an East Asian feeling.
