Three leading K-dramas in 2020 were (from left to right) "Itaewon Class," "Backstreet Rookie" and "It's Okay Not to Be Okay." (Bettina Miski)
"It's Okay Not to Be Okay"
I've watched all 16 episodes three times. Starring an amazing cast, this series might be a romance story in the end but is a lot more than that. Several damaged young adults try to overcome trauma and mental illness while leading their lives, making this a dark melodrama at times. This is definitely not light content in being provocative and harsh, but can also be comforting and thought provoking.
"Itaewon Class"
Based on a popular webtoon, this revenge story is about chasing one's dreams and love. The characters are captivating in showing a blood feud, class warfare, corruption, betrayal and murder. Get ready to be upset at times and waiting between episodes can get frustrating, so this is perfect for binging. It also might give viewers courage to keep going in the new year.
"Backstreet Rookie"
For those into lighter fare, this allows viewers to relax and let heavy feelings go. The plot is shallow, but the sassy dialogue and funny characters make up for it.
"Extracurricular" (left) and "The King: Eternal Monarch" (Bettina Miski)
"The King: Eternal Monarch"
Time travel, parallel worlds, a lot of confusion, enemies, love and charisma. Can the characters in this drama fix what goes wrong in the world and still end up happily together? The plot is intriguing enough to keep the audience guessing at the ending. But things happen quickly and details are important, so close attention is required.
"Extracurricular"
This is another dark but funny show with impressive acting and writing. A high schooler leading a double life tries to juggle life with some not-so-legal actions. Dealing with dark and taboo topics, this is a lot more than the average story told by a teenage boy. Viewers will keep hitting the "Next episode" button until the end, but a second season has yet to be confirmed.
