Fans of Hallyu are probably familiar with tteokbokki (spicy rice cake), yet many other dishes can be made using tteok as the main ingredient. The following are five snacks of these that can be made at home.

Tteokbokki

A savory and spicy taste makes this dish a perennial favorite among street food lovers in Korea. The chewy texture causes those eating it not want to stop chewing, and the spicy taste and variations of the food have won fans the world over.

Tteokkochi

This rice cake skewer is easy to find at street food kiosks in Korea. Crispy outside but chewy inside, this dish gets more addictive by adding spicy sweet sauce on top. This is also easy to make, as it just requires sticking the rice cake on a skewer and baking it.

Jjajang tteokbokki

Rice cake in black bean sauce simply substitutes the noodles in jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) with tteok to create a sweet and salty taste. This dish appeals to everyone including children because of its non-spicy taste.

Tteokguk

This warm soup with tteok is traditionally eaten on New Year to wish for luck and prosperity. Made of slices of rice cake, beef and eggs, this dish is great for eating in cold weather and during the rainy season to warm the body.

Rabokki

A recent variation of tteokbokki, this version adds noodles and hardboiled eggs along with rice cake. Other options include dumplings, spring rolls and melted cheese.
