Spring in Korea normally runs from March to May, with an average temperature of 15-18 degrees Celsius. The weather is neither hot nor cold, making it an opportune time for outdoor activities.

Flowers begin to bloom in this season and flower festivals are held. The following are my favorite spring flowers in Korea.

Azaleas (Korea.net)

Azalea

This flower has a unique shape that is tubular, funnel or bell like. Korean azaleas are mostly on mountains and come in many colors including pink, red, white, yellow and purple. The azalea is considered a garden plant with many varieties.

Royal azaleas indigenous to Korea are in many hillside forests. Beautiful pink azaleas are on mountainsides and in hillside forests, especially on Womnisan Mountain, where the Wonmisan Azalea Festival is held in April. Azaleas start to bloom in early spring in Korea.

Cherry blossom

Cherry blossom (beotkkot in Korean) season is one of the most popular times to visit Korea. A cherry blossom is a flower of the many trees of genus Prunus. People line up for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. Cherry blossoms bloom around two weeks between late March and early April.

Canolas (Korea.net)

Canola

The canola (rapeseed) has petals colored bright yellow and cultured for the oil-rich canola seed. This flower is mostly found in fields, especially on Jeju Island, which hosts the annual Jeju Canola Flower Festival. Canola events and blooming periods are held April through May, and the flowers can also be seen in Busan and Seoul.

Forsythias (Korea.net)

Forsythia

Forsythia (golden bell) is a shrub from the olive family and blooms mostly in full sun. It has long branches and an arching form with bright yellow flower blossoms in spring. Forsythias are the first plants to grow flowers in spring. Because they are sturdy, such flowers grow everywhere at parks, bushes, or by the riverside or roadside. The blooming period is late March to early May.
