The New York Comic Con, the largest pop culture convention of the U.S. East Coast and the only event held in the world capital for comic books, publishing, media and licensing, from Oct. 7-10 returned after a year's hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a sign of optimism for a return to normalcy.

The hit Korean comic "Solo Leveling" held a prime position at the entrance to the showroom floor. Next to it was the print edition of "The Abandoned Empress," another Korean webtoon (online comic).

“We were surprised that there were many people interested," said Lee Dong-kun, manager at the Overseas Exhibition Department of Exporum, a meeting, incentives, convention and exhibition company based in Seoul.

Booth staff member Kevin Lim added, "Our comics have interaction with viewers because some are dynamic," referring to the animated visual and sound effects.

Korean comics at the convention were just one example of Hallu's growing international presence.

Appearing at the event was Johnny Yong Bosch, who is most famous for appearing in the hit TV series "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" series. Born to a Korean mother and an American father, the actor, musician and martial artist in an interview described his new short film "Ark Exitus," a sci-fi thriller and his directorial debut.

How did you put "Ark Exitus" together?
In 2019, a couple of us were like "Let's shoot an action film and give it to the fans." The week before shooting, it all fell apart. My business partner couldn't do it. In under a week, I came up with a new story and pitched it to friends who are writers and they helped me. In the end, it was a lot better than I thought it'd turn out.

Your career started with doing stunts and fight scenes on "Power Rangers." How did it feel to again perform martial arts on screen?
It's my favorite thing to do. I love action and I'm a martial artist. It was great to get back in.

How do you feel about Hallyu gaining popularity in the U.S.?
I love that. Korean films are great. I'm excited to see more stuff coming out of Korea.

Anything to say to your fans?

I wouldn't be here without the fans who supported me. I thank all of them for being there. It's the reason I made that film. It's all because of the fans.
