The Global Hansang Diaspora Project Group of Chonnam National University in Gwangju on Oct. 5 held a webinar on the "100-year History of the Korean Cuban Diaspora Reexamined: Linkages to the Ethnic Homeland, Multiple Identities, and Foreign Policy Issues.”
First, Kim Jae-gi, a Chonnam professor of political science and international relations who planned the webinar, gave a presentation on the centennial history of the Korean Cuban diaspora and related foreign policy issues.
The launch of professor Kim Jae-gi's exhibition "100 Years of the Korean Diaspora in Cuba" in March in Seoul features the attendance of Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Seong-ho and generations of ethnic Koreans from Cuba.
Second, professors Noh Yong-seok and Lee Jeong-hwa from Pukyong National University in Busan presented their paper "Factors Contributing to the Linkages of Korean Descendants in Mexico and Cuba to their Ethnic Homeland."
And third, Bae Jin-suk, a research professor at Konkuk University in Seoul who conducted the first scholarly research on Korean Cubans residing in the U.S., spoke on "Transnational Mobility and Multiple Identities among the Korean Cuban Diaspora in the U.S."
Professors from Korean universities gave presentations on the Korean Cuban diaspora at the webinar.
"Hopefully, an event like this will promote improved understanding of and increased interest in the history of Korean Cubans among Korean nationals," Bae said.
This webinar commemorated the centennial anniversary of Korean immigration to Cuba and the 15th World Korean Day.
