Red bean porridge, or patjuk, is a traditional Korean dish served during Dongji, one of the 24 solar terms under the lunar calendar that marks winter solstice. This dish is nutritious as red beans are high in Vitamin B1.

This is red bean porridge made by Honorary Reporter from Egypt Aya Elhadidy.

Just three ingredients are required: red beans, rice cake and rice. To make the porridge, ensure that the beans are thoroughly cleaned before boiling them with water. Pour the beans and water into a pot and fill the latter with water and rice. While the pot is boiling, mash the cooked rice into rice balls and fry them with salt. Put the balls into the pot and boil them together.

Koreans usually eat such porridge in winter, reminding me of the Egyptian custom of eating lentil soup in winter.
