Korean variety shows are another part of the Hallyu boom in showing the funny side of Korean celebrities. They have whimsical content and, like K-dramas, have a wide variety of genres. The following are five such shows prominent in Korean entertainment.
'Sixth Sense'
The cast of this show and a guest must guess which of three locations is fake. Yoo Jae-suk, a renowned comedian in Korea, and his other co-hosts this year appear in Season 3 under a revamped format.
'Knowing Brothers'
Also called "Men on a Mission," this award-winning show is hosted by several of Korea's most popular comedians. In a classroom setup, the hosts every week play students and celebrity guests "transfer students" in a battle of wit and laughter.
'Idol Dictation Contest'
A spin-off version of the popular variety series "Amazing Saturday," this two-season show brought together members from K-pop acts who listened to snippets of songs and wrote the correct lyrics to win. Seeing several generations of idols and their synergy while playing was fun.
'Running Man'
Perhaps the king of Korean variety shows, "Running Man" will air its 13th season this year. The show features famous entertainers who sprint to complete missions as a squad along with guests.
'My Little Old Boy'
"My Little Old Boy" is a popular reality series featuring the mothers of Korean celebrities. It features commentary from the women as they watch footage of their children's daily activities. Launched in 2016, the program has attracted an audience by showing the interesting relationships between the mothers and leading Korean celebrities.
These variety shows could eventually replace K-dramas for many Hallyu fans.
