Korea this month will host eight film festivals. Starting things off are two indie events, one in Gangneung, Gangwon-do Province, and the other in Incheon. Then Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, hosts Asia's biggest film-and-music festival. Afterwards, Seoul holds a festival for new media, another for web series and a third for documentaries. Ending the month are an event in Daegu for indie productions and another in Seoul for female filmmakers.
This article will introduce the latter four of the eight events.
Seoul Webfest
To run from Aug. 19-21 at the cultural space L Convention, the eighth Seoul Webfest features movies in a web series format as the first festival of its kind in Northeast Asia. Along with a red carpet event, screenings and shows, the event will also have content creators appear. The official website (https://www.seoulwebfest.com/) is in English.
EBS International Documentary Festival
The 19th edition of this festival (https://www.eidf.co.kr/eng), which is organized by Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), will run from Aug. 22-28. Considering one of Asia's leading events for documentaries, this hybrid event will be held at theaters and have content aired on the EBS channel.
Daegu Independent Short Film Festival
The 23rd edition of this festival will introduce independent productions both from Korea and abroad. Running from Aug. 24-29, this event is a showcase for up-and-coming talent. The website (http://www.diff.kr) is in Korean and the screening venue is Oh Theater at Daegu Independent Film Center.
Seoul International Women's Film Festival
Now in its 24th year, this festival (https://www.siwff.or.kr/) is one of the leading events of its kind not only in Asia but around the world. Running from Aug. 25 to Sept. 1, the festival focuses on developing and supporting gender-equal works and female filmmakers. The opening film will be "The Janes" by co-directors Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes from the U.S.
