Ramadan this year is from March 23 to April 21. Even in Korea, many foods for this occasion are easy to make but also nutritious. The following are five Korean foods I recommend to break fast during Ramadan.

My sister and I love japchae because of its similarities to Indonesian foods such as fried noodles or vermicelli (Denissa Dewi Chandra)

Japchae
As my favorite food, this filling dish is easy to make with its glass noodles, making it perfect for breaking fast. Japchae contains beef and sliced vegetables and has the distinctive aroma of sesame oil. As a substitute for rice, it comes in large portions with high nutritional content, which is perfect for keeping the body strong during Ramadan.

Pajeon
Also easy to cook and with readily accessible ingredients, pajeon features cooking similar to that of pancakes. Apart from green onions, this dish usually has as add-ons beef, kimchi and shrimp depending on taste.

Gimbap is often sold at open-air markets in Korea. (Korea.net's Flickr account)

Gimbap
During sahur, when Muslims eat before fasting, they often need food that is practical and easy to make. Thus gimbap is the right choice thanks to its basic ingredients of rice and seaweed. It is also a good protein source with meat and eggs and sliced vegetables rich in vitamins.

Bibimbap
Bibimbap has similar ingredients to gimbap but is served in bigger portions and often with stew. Its fillings such as white rice, beef, eggs, grated carrots, mushrooms, soy sauce and sesame oil create a distinctive aroma that is so appetizing.

Samgyetang
Often eaten during Korea's hot summers, this chicken soup is made with chicken mixed with spices such as ginseng and other herbs. Along with its medicinal benefits, this dish can be eaten with rice and is highly nutritious.
