Chris James, a German-American songwriter and producer, and BLVSH (real name Alina Paulsen), a German-Polish songwriter, are two talented songwriters who have made their mark in K-pop with impactful and moving lyrics. They have worked with several of the biggest names in the industry, creating chart-topping hits like "Life Goes On" by BTS, "Good Boy Gone Bad" by TXT and "Fearless" by Le Sserafim that have become anthems for a generation.
The following are excerpts from an interview conducted with both songwriters between May 25 and June 10, where they opened up about their experiences and journey into the K-pop industry.
Briefly introduce yourself and how you got into the music business.
James: I started when I was 15. My dad had a guitar in the basement that I was just messing with. From there, I created a YouTube channel with my childhood best friend and we posted covers and music videos. Eventually I started writing songs for the channel and just never stopped.
BLVSH: I grew up on a little island in Germany called Fohr. I was always interested in art and music and sold my paintings while growing up. After moving to Berlin, I decided to pursue a career in music full time both as a songwriter and artist. I truly love the collaborative aspect of music, too.

How was it working on BTS songs and most recently those for its members?
James: It's honestly so crazy. I feel super honored to work with such talented musicians. I never would've thought I'd be part of something this crazy.
BLVSH: I feel very grateful and proud to be part of such a beautiful project. I've learned so much and met so many amazing people through this. It's inspiring how much love and hard work are put into every song.

What are the most challenging aspects of creating works for K-pop?
James: I think it's just so much fun to make these songs. It's a great creative exercise as well, because it puts us into new musical situations with every track and artist. I feel that writing these tracks together with my co-writer BLVSH has definitely made me a better songwriter.
BLVSH: The biggest challenge is to let loose and not overthink. The best K-pop songs happen when you're intuitively falling into the music and writing what feels good in the moment instead of trying to force a perfect song. It's important to not let expectations or pressure distract you from creating music freely.

What do you think is the secret behind K-pop's global dominance?
James: Every detail of a song is extremely well thought out. Every lyric is there for a reason and every note has a purpose. I also love how concept driven the entire rollout always is. I have so much respect for the artists and the hard work they put into their performances.
BLVSH: The songs are created with listeners in mind. Each song is an experience and allows the listener to be brought into the artist's world.

Finally, what advice do you have for aspiring songwriters eyeing to enter the sector?
James: Just don't give up. It gets hard sometimes but always stay easy on yourself and have a good time. Music is meant to be fun and I believe you can only go the distance if you take care of your mental health and try to pace yourself as much as you can.
BLVSH: Find your voice. It is going to be hard to speak up in some settings but the more you do, the easier it becomes. Your voice is powerful and it deserves to be heard. And also figure out what your strengths are and lean into them. Find your character by doing what makes you feel confident about yourself.
