Turkish soldiers showed unforgettable heroism in the Korean War (1950-53), one of them being Hasan Mergen, 92, who gave a short interview on June 13 to mark the 73rd anniversary of the war's start. As I’m a photographer and a Korean war collector, I met him 2 years ago in Istanbul Korean Consulate meeting at a special veteran day.
Briefly give your background.
I was born in 1931 in the resort town of Alanya. After my father died when I was 15, I left school to work and earn money for my family.

What unforgettable moments do you remember from your service in Korea?
A sad memory was when my comrade Abdullah was shot dead next to me and I was injured by shrapnel that bounced off him. I still cannot forget his death, as he was such a good man. I spent 15 days in the hospital after which I went back to the front lines.
Another memory is of a young girl who was trembling in a field. I took her in my truck, made safety belts with cables so she wouldn't fall out of the vehicle and took her to a mobile field hospital.

Have you visited Korea since the war?
Unfortunately, no. But I plan to visit this year with my son.
What are your thoughts on Korea 70 years after the Korean War?
The last time I was in Korea, it was in ruins. But Koreans are such hardworking and intelligent people who rebuilt their country in such a short time and set an example for everyone.
Korean War veteran Hasan Mergen still remembers the Korean War even seven decades later.
