The "Oh! My Gyeonggi" (OMG) initiative launched by the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization in 2023 promotes tourism in Gyeonggi-do Province, which surrounds Seoul. From May to November this year, expats in Seoul or the province received the opportunity to explore the hidden gems of this region.
Diana Durante, an Honorary Reporter from Mexico since 2021 and a freelance language instructor and content creator based in Korea, received the OMG Excellent Creator Award for her participation in the program.
The follow are excerpts from a Nov. 24 email interview with her on her experience in the program.
Diana Durante is an Honorary Reporter from Mexico based in Korea and works as an instructor of Spanish and English and content creator.
Briefly introduce yourself.
I came to Korea about five years ago and work as a freelance instructor of Spanish and English and content creator. I love traveling, meeting new people and exploring new things. I'm also active in the Latin community in Korea and share as much as I can about my cultural experiences and Korean culture to friends back in my country.
How did you get involved with the "Oh! My Gyeonggi" program?
I got to know about this program through a close friend. I saw her taking surfing lessons in Korea and was so curious about it. I found out that this program allowed her to do this. Moreover, I wanted to discover a region I initially perceived as rural.
How was the selection procedure and eligibility criteria like?
The journey to becoming a program ambassador had three stages: application, interview and selection. Criteria included residence in Korea, active social media presence, flexibility for weekday excursions, and receiving bonus points for content featuring passion for travel and higher follower counts.
How did this initiative help you explore Gyeonggi-do?
On a scale of 100, I'd confidently give it a perfect score. The program transcended my expectations, unraveling hidden gems and diverse experiences in Gyeonggi-do that I never knew of before. Accessibility to activities like a surfing pool, Sports Monster playground and even the DMZ through seamless train connections was both surprising and delightful.
Name a few activities you participated in through the program.
Each activity felt like a chapter in an adventure novel. Surfing lessons started my newfound passion, the Sports Monster playground in Hanam, Gyeonggi-do, unleashed my inner child and a visit to the DMZ, coupled with the "Race for Peace," presented a unique lens into Korea's political landscape.
Diana Durante picked Suwon Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do Province, as her favorite place to visit during her participation in the program.
What is one thing you recommend to someone planning to visit Gyeonggi-do?
Recommendations vary depending on personal interest. For history enthusiasts, a visit to the DMZ is unparalleled, offering deep insights into Korean history. The fortress is a cultural treasure, while Gapyeong Cloud Sheep Farm Cafe is a haven for animal lovers.
What was the best part of your experience in the program?
Beyond exploration, the true rewards of the program were the human connections I made as I met extraordinary individuals, formed enduring friendships, and gained profound insights into Korea's history and culture. This journey transcended mere tourism.
Diana Durante on Nov. 11 received this award for her participation in the "Oh! My Gyeonggi" program.
What advice would you give to someone considering this program?
To aspiring participants, seize the opportunity to expand your social media presence but remember that quality content is paramount. Create content that not only attracts attention but is also unique and informative to ensure a balance between the numbers game and the art of storytelling.
