Where do lonely hearts go? To the library at the Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in Taguig, the Philippines.

The KCC's unique way to celebrate Valentine's Day on Feb. 16 was a chance to "date" fictional characters through the event "Blind Date with a Book," which I attended.

The concept behind this event was inspired by blind dates that had individuals share their personality descriptions after meeting each other. At this event, attendees could choose from the numerous books on the shelves, each accompanied by explanations tailored to their preferences.

The categories were "Intelligent Creative," "Poetic Inspirational," "Intelligent Heroic Imaginative," "Mysterious Investigative," "Sweet Romantic Understanding," "Nature Lively," "Old Soul Adventurer History Buff" and "Adventurous Thrill Seeker Brave."

I chose an "Imaginative Intelligent and Creative" date and matching this description was the book "Seasons in Another World" (2009), which was a great read and the perfect match. Additionally, the book covers are concealed with paper and ribbon to preserve the mystery for readers.

The venue also provides a quiet, cozy and comfortable reading nook with a banig, a Philippine woven mat mostly used for sleeping or sitting, cushions and tables available for placing books.

After reading, I scanned a QR code to take a survey for the chance to win a Korean book set and a random novel. In addition to the titles designated for the event, I also explored the library to discover the many new arrivals and monthly features on the shelves.

So thanks to this experience, I feel Valentine's Day isn't just for romantic relationships but also about self-care and finding joy through fictional characters. This event reminded me that though I'm single, I'm not alone.
