This year's Chunhyang Festival in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do Province, ran from May 10-16 as the 94th edition of its kind, highlighting Korea's commitment to tradition.

Rooted in the Joseon Dynasty, pansori (lyrical solo opera) is a vital part of traditional Korean culture. Dating back to 1931, the festival celebrates "Chunhyangjeon" (The Tale of Chunhyang), a classic tale of true love.

The event honors the story's main characters, Chunhyang and Mongryong, and their love through pansori, creating along the way a gathering for families from Namwon and beyond. The activities and performances form a vibrant atmosphere, with a traditional pavilion for performances and standing areas along a scenic river with colorful lanterns.

Attending the festival on May 15, I experienced folk music, a drawing contest, choir performance, talent show, family walks and food stalls. The highlight was the Chunhyang Traditional Beauty Pageant, where women nationwide competed to become the next Chunhyang dressed in Hanbok (traditional costume).

Namwon residents made the story of Chunhyang come to life. They rode a replica of the swing where Chunhyang and Mongryong met, visited Chunhyang's home and saw big statues of both characters decorated with flowers.

A museum offered insights into the timeless tale as portrayed in pansori and other art forms like plays, musicals, movies, operas, ballets and books. Memorabilia like entrance tickets, film stills and paintings of Chunhyang were also displayed there.

I was profoundly moved by the enduring impact of pansori on life in Korea, particularly in understanding and embracing love. I hope more people worldwide get an opportunity to take part in this event.
