As part of the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism's campaign "Local 100," which seeks to promote tourist spots outside of Seoul, Busan and Jeju Island, I joined a group in visiting Donghae, Gangwon-do Province, a city on the eastern coast rich in history and natural beauty on June 7.
Our adventure began with a visit to Samhwasa Temple, nestled in the tranquil mountains. Dating back to 642 A.D. during the ancient Silla Kingdom, this structure is renowned for its serene environment and historical significance as a place to deeply connect with the nation's spiritual heritage.
Templestay programs allow visitors to experience Buddhist life and culture. A highlight of my visit was sharing a meal with monks.

Strolling through Donghae, we stopped by a filming location for the popular K-drama "Mother." This spot is a magnet for fans of the series, offering a tangible connection to its memorable scenes.

We moved to breathtaking lavender fields on a charming little train amid waves of purple. The Mureungbyul Yuchi Lavender Festival, which ran this year from June 8-23, is a must-visit.
The panoramic view where the river and mountains converge is spectacular and perfect for selfies, as evident from the eager crowds there.

Next was Mureung Byeolyuncheonji Stone Factory, which displayed the history of stone craftsmanship in Donghae. The exhibits of old photos and demonstrations of stone-working techniques provided fascinating insight into this traditional craft.
Visitors learned how the stones were transformed and even tried cement-shaped ice cream.

More modern attractions in Donghae include Sky Valley, which offers an exhilarating sky walk, giant slides, sky cycle and sea bridge observatory. Dojibigol Graffiti added color and creativity to the visit, showcasing vibrant murals that tell stories of the community there.

Concluding the day was a delicious sashimi dinner at a seaside restaurant. The fresh seafood combined with the stunning sea view was the perfect ending to a day filled with culture and adventure.
