Barefoot hiking is a rising health trend worldwide but in Korea, this longstanding traditional practice is called maenbal deungsan

This practice is popular in regions with trails at parks customized for barefoot hiking in places like Jeju Island, Seoul, Yongin and Hanam, Gyeonggi-do Province, and Ulsan. Barefoot hikers can absorb the positive energy of a mountain through their feet to improve well-being and get close to nature.

I visited Jeongbalsan Mountain in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, on May 14 for a hike and was surprised to see a handful of hikers trekking barefoot. This picturesque mountain offers a network of well-marked trails perfect for exploring the area's natural beauty.

Jeongbalsan Mountain is a favorite among locals for barefoot hiking.

The crown jewel of Jeongbalsan is the path Barefoot Experience, which is for hikers without shoes. Walking on the soft pine needle carpet and cool stones can melt away stress and foster a connection with nature.

Signs like this help hikers navigate trails around Jeongbalsan Mountain in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do Province.

Other than trails, Jeongbalsan has paved roads for easy access, a state-of-the-art outdoor gym on the hillside and scenic pagoda at the summit. After conquering the trails, go for an invigorating workout, breathe in the fresh air, feel the cool summer breeze at the pagoda and take in the stunning panoramic view of Goyang.

The pagoda at the summit rewards hikers with a breathtaking panoramic view of Goyang.

Barefoot walking is more than just cooling down. The practice is said to improve blood circulation, reduce stress and deepen one's connection with nature's energy.

A regular visitor to Jeongbalsan said about barefoot hiking, "It requires a different kind of focus. Each step keeps you present and engaged in the moment. The stimulation of your soles feels incredible, almost like a natural acupuncture treatment, and leaves you feeling energized and revitalized."

Research has found that barefoot walking can improve circulation and thus potentially improve memory and digestion. Doctors advise caution when walking barefoot, however, and to watch out for extreme temperatures, sharp objects, pollutants, and germs that can cause burns and painful infections.
