The Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong hosted a book talk by noted author Kim Ho-yeon.
Before pursuing writing full time, Kim was a scriptwriter for movies and comics and a novel editor, struggling seven years to make it as a writer. In 2013, his novel "Mangwon-dong Brothers," a heartwarming novel about four men in a small rooftop room, won the Excellence Prize at the Segye Literary Prizes and was adapted into a stage play.
Kim shares his insights from his 20-year writing career.
Despite facing financial challenges, he said his passion for writing kept him going despite his first four novels being unsuccessful. He said he persevered before "Uncanny Convenience Store" secured him a publishing contract and credited the novel's success to word of mouth from readers.
Stressing his philosophy of "win or learn" rather than "win or lose," he said every setback offers valuable lessons for success. He encouraged the audience to pursue their passions and create their own lives.
Author Kim Ho-yeon signs my books at the autograph session and poses for a photo.
During the autograph session, I chatted briefly with Kim, took photos and had him sign four copies of his books that I own. I found him resilient, humble and approachable as well as inspiring due to this honest sharing of his successes and failures.
His message of perseverance and passion reinforced my interest in Korean culture.
